GEORGETOWN — Georgetown County students could see more days off in the future, but they'll start school earlier under proposed changes to the district's calendar for the next two years.

Chelice Waites, the district's chief human resources officer, told the school board at a Jan. 18 meeting that the school board's calendar planning committee has seen other school districts in South Carolina move to a modified year-round schedule and is using that model. said he wanted to continue.

The revised year-round schedule still allows for eight weeks of summer vacation and still requires students to attend 180 days of class, but the days are spread more widely throughout the year.

The main difference between the two calendars is that students have a week off each semester. Traditionally, students have one week off for Thanksgiving, two weeks off for Christmas, and one week off for spring break.

In the updated year-round version, students have a week off in October, November and April in addition to the usual two weeks at Christmas.

Beginning in the 2023-24 school year, teachers will begin work on July 26 and students will return on August 2. The last day of the semester is December 20, and the course ends on May 24.

In the current academic year, teachers returned on August 11, and students started studying on August 18. Traditionally, the first semester ended in mid-January after the Christmas break. School ends on June 3.

In the transition to the new system, the district will follow more or less the same calendar for the 2022-23 middle school year, but teachers and students will return to school earlier than before.

Next year, teachers will start classes on August 1, and students will return to classes on August 8. The last day of the semester will be December 16, 2022 instead of January 13 this year.

"I like the idea of ​​the semester ending in December," school board member Bill Gaskins said of the proposed changes. "Instead of shortening the time, it's between our students coming back and the start of the second semester."

The proposed new plan will be sent to district staff and the public for comment, with a first reading expected at the Feb. 1 school board meeting.
