Mesquite Isd Calendar 2023-24 – After receiving the support of GPS families and staff, Gilbert Public Schools will officially transition to the new school calendar beginning in the 2022-2023 school year. The new calendar means students and staff will have two weeks off during fall, winter and spring break. The board of trustees officially approved the new calendar in February 2021 after surveys showed both GPS families and employees welcomed the changes.

The school year will begin eight days earlier than this school year, with the first full day of classes beginning on July 26, 2022. Early start allows students to participate in improvement programs and learn when needed. Our campus teachers will receive professional development training according to the previous school calendar. Even if the fall and spring vacations are extended, we are working to ensure that the learning environment is not disrupted.

Gilbert Public Schools share the same schedule as neighboring districts such as Chandler USD, Higley USD, and Queen Creek USD. GPS students and staff will resume classes the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, as well as spring break. Breaks make it easier for families to prioritize time together and plan trips. For families concerned about childcare needs, Gilbert Public Schools offers enrichment programs, youth sports and summer camps.

The school year is about to start in elementary school, and summer temperatures can make it difficult to enjoy the outdoors for a few days. If it's a heat advisory day, first graders stay indoors using GPS, games, videos and other activities to keep them entertained during recess. The school defines its activities according to the needs of the students.

The new school calendar transitions to four seasons for GPS elementary school campus athletics, allowing each school to list boys volleyball as a team sport. Also, football sports for boys and girls in the seventh and eighth grades will be expanded. Including the playoffs and some schedule changes, the junior season is nine weeks long. Gilbert also has the opportunity to support player development through youth athletics. A preview of the 2022-2023 youth sports program is now available online. GPS athletes and families may contact the campus athletic director with questions about the impact of the calendar on junior sports. The Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) continues to oversee and govern athletics at GPS high schools.

The new calendar changes will also take effect in the 2023-2024 school year. The first full day of the academic year will be July 25, 2023. The CISD Los Fresnos Board of Trustees approved changes to the 2020-2021 school calendar at the Jan. 11 regular board meeting, based on the superintendent's recommendation. .

Governor Gonzalo Salazar recommended that the academic calendar be shortened by five days. The updated calendar lists June 10, 2021 as the last day of school and starts on June 12 instead of June 19.

Board action is to update the previously approved academic calendar on July 13, 2020. At that meeting, Salazar recommended CISD Los Fresno delay the school year until Sept. 8, with the last day of school scheduled for June 17.

"With all the uncertainty at the beginning of the school year, we added extra minutes to the academic calendar," Salazar told the board. "This is a responsible measure before the district stops dredging. Now that the school year is approaching, it's clear that if schools need to be closed for dredging, they can do it now. Take distance learning and don't waste time."

The Texas Education Agency requires at least 75,600 minutes of instruction each school year. Los Fresnos CISD has enough instructional minutes during the school year to exceed the minimum instructional minutes of five school days. The academic calendar was revised, reducing the number of school days to five.
