Gwinnett County High School Football Schedules

In a 6-1 vote, with two board members absent, the Aiken County Board of Education approved a revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting Tuesday night.

With the changed calendar, students will have shorter summers and instead have two weeks off in the fall and spring semesters. One week of each semester will be remedial week, giving students who need academic help the opportunity to receive it.

Under the revised 2023-24 calendar, students begin classes on Tuesday, July 25, 2023. Fall vacation is scheduled for July 2-13 October, 2-6 and October will be week of recommendation. The Thanksgiving holiday will be November 22-24. Christmas break for students will be from December 20, 2023 to January 3, 2024. Spring Break will be April 1 to 12 and Holy Week will be April 1 to 5, 2024. The last day of school is Thursday, May 30. , 2024.

Other breaks in the proposed calendar include Labor Day on September 4, 2023; Friday 20 October is the weather day; January 15 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day; holiday and President's Day on Friday, February 16 and Monday, February 19, 2024; Weather make-up day on Thursday 28 March; and the Good Friday holiday on Friday 29 March 2024.

Board member Jason Crane cast the lone vote against the calendar. During the meeting, he again raised concerns about how the calendar would affect Gateway's several programs, including athletics, band and performing arts programs.

"My concern is that a shorter summer … will affect athletics, band and Gateway," Crane said after the meeting. "I believe the district will resolve it, but I also think it's a huge negative for us. I voted with my conscience."

Crane added that he supports the idea of ​​a rotating calendar, noting that only a two-week break each semester gives him a break.

"…I'm not too excited about the fact that we need two weeks for this break," Crane said. "I think one week would be enough, but the board voted for what we voted for and I will support it moving forward."

During the meeting, Aiken County Superintendent King Lawrence said the summer of 2023 will be tough for band practice because there is usually a three-week summer band camp. However, there are several options for band managers.

Lawrence noted that the competitions are determined by the state and that South Carolina has different school schedules. He recommends using mediation for a one-week band camp and additional band camps in the summer.

"Yeah, you're used to the three-week band camp in the summer, how about taking advantage of those prayer times for the one-week band camp in the summer and the extra band camp," Lawrence said. "One two-week team camp in the summer and another in the fall. I'm just saying people have to look at things a little differently and adjust to it."

As for the athletic schedule, Lawrence said league schedules are set by the state so it won't be affected too much. Trainings have to be adjusted, especially summer trainings and their dates.

"Football and other fall sports definitely have this break (games)," Lawrence said. "It's no different than basketball during Christmas break, baseball and softball during spring break."

Concerns were also raised about how well the two-week cleanup would work. Crane said he's not sure the two-week breaks will serve their intended purpose, and he's heard feedback from other people who feel the same way.

"We can create a 30-minute intervention every day (during the school year)," Lawrence said. "Thirty-minute intervention is a good, intensive intervention for our students in a small group setting… If we look at a five-hour workday during that intervention, that's 10 times longer than a typical school day. So for five days they're a typical school day. This one-week intervention of 30 minutes at a time can be equivalent to 50 days of intervention over a school year.

"Everything we do for these students will be designed to help them succeed in the next quarter," Lawrence said. "I think we can do a lot better this week. In fact, we heard from a school district a few weeks ago that saw results after a week of intervention.

For Gateway, Lawrence said it should take 30 days and they are looking at how to implement those 30 days. Options he mentioned include 20 or 25 days in the summer and five days in the fall, or five days in the fall and spring.

"Everything will be easier in the first year because you have an extra week," Lawrence said. "An extra week doesn't sound like much, but that extra week gives you a little more flexibility in your summer plans."

Chairman of the school board. John Bradley said he had doubts about the revised calendar, but the fact that most respondents supported it influenced his decision to vote for approval.

"I'm going to vote for it knowing that we're going to create a lot of problems for some people," Bradley said. "I apologize for that. But again, I think we should do what the majority of people want, unless there's a reason or good reason not to."

During the Jan. 25 meeting, board members approved the transition to the revised calendar concept, but did not approve the actual calendar at that time.
