By a 6-1 vote, with two board members absent, the Aiken County Board of Education approved a revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting Tuesday night.

With the modified calendar, students will have a shorter summer and a two-week break in the fall and spring semesters. One of the weeks of each semester is remedial week, giving students who need academic help the opportunity to receive it.

The revised calendar for 2023-24 calls for students to begin classes on Tuesday, July 25, 2023. Autumn vacations are October 2-13 and October 2-6 as a week of intercession. The Thanksgiving holiday will be November 22-24. Christmas break for students will be from 20 December 2023 to 3 January 2024. As for the sports schedule, Lawrence said the tournament schedule is determined by the state, so it doesn't affect them much. Internships, especially summer internships, and their deadlines should be adjusted.

"Football and other fall sports will definitely be (games) this offseason," Lawrence said. "It's no different than playing basketball on Christmas break and baseball and softball on spring break."

Another concern was how well the claimed two-week repair would work. Crain said he's not sure the two-week breaks will serve their purpose, and he's heard other opinions.

"We can get 30 minutes a day (during the school year)," Lawrence said. "Thirty-minute intervention is a good intensive intervention for our students in a small group setting…If we factor in five hours a day during this intervention, that's 10 times more than what they get in a regular school day. So five days earns 50 times more than a normal school day. This week of intervention could potentially equate to 50 days of intervention, 30 minutes each time during the school year."

"Everything we do for these students is designed to set them up for success next quarter," Lawrence said. "I think we can do great things this week. In fact, a few weeks ago we heard from a school district that saw the results of a week of intervention."

As for Gateway, Lawrence said it should be 30 days and they are trying to get that 30 days. Possibilities he mentioned include 20 or 25 days in the summer and five days in the fall, or five days in the fall and spring.

"After the first year, things get easier because you have an extra week," Lawrence said. "An extra week doesn't seem like much, but that extra week gives you a little more flexibility in your summer planning."

Board President Dr. John Bradley said he was skeptical of the schedule change, but the overwhelming approval rating of those polled played a role in his decision to vote to approve it.

"Knowing that we've created a lot of problems for some people, I'm going to vote yes," Bradley said. "I'm sorry about that. But I still feel like we have to do something that most people don't want to do for no reason or very good reason."

While board members approved moving to the modified calendar concept at their Jan. 25 meeting, they did not approve the actual calendar at that time.
