On January 24, 2014, the Board of Directors and Interim President Mary Sue Coleman held a special meeting to announce Coleman's dismissal, and now Brown University President Mark Schlissel will become the University's 14th president.

"We ask graduates of the University of Michigan to join us in reminding Mark Schlissel of the central lesson of intellectualism: Academic freedom is not pure and quiet, and it is not respected and suppressed," the letter said. "Not all good ideas with public value are useful. When it comes to racism, sexism, labor exploitation, deprivation of public resources and reducing the number of people working, studying and researching for the classroom, they can't and won't agree.

Schlissel's appointment comes after a more than $315,000 presidential investigation that lasted more than eight months and met initial expectations from students and faculty. Dentistry professor Rex Holland, who serves as vice chair of the Senate Advisory Committee on University Affairs, said he was impressed by Schlissel's qualifications and pleased to see him lead the University.

"I am very impressed with the position of President-elect Schlissel," Holland said at the 2014 SACUA conference. "I am very confident that President-elect Schlissel will be an excellent leader for an extraordinary organization."

The 2014 Student Center Board members were also intrigued by the way Schlissel made his announcement.

The 2016 election showed the level of controversy on campus. After President Donald Trump's surprise victory on November 8, Schlissel wrote an email to the university offering resources for students to seek support after the election.

"I hope we will all continue to proudly embrace the opportunities that lie before us as students, faculty and staff at people-driven public research universities," Schlissel wrote. "Election is often a time of great change, but the values ​​we stand for at UM have been set for nearly 200 years.

At a protest following Trump's November 10 victory at Diag, Schlissel addressed the crowd and urged them to continue standing up for what they believe in.

The statement drew criticism from disgruntled students on campus who wrote a petition condemning Trump's anti-Trump protests and Schlissel's comments.

The Mackinac Center for Public Policy filed a lawsuit in 2017, saying the university failed to release the emails Schlissel sent after the 2016 election within the timeframe mandated by the Michigan state's Freedom of Information Act.

The hearing, which took place later in 2017, revealed that Schlissel was concerned about Trump's victory in the days after the election and had problems with the idea of ​​choosing a manager to work in the Trump administration.
