Georgetown County students may face more scheduled holidays moving forward, forcing them to return to school earlier as the district plans its school calendar for the next two years.

Georgetown. In the future, Georgetown students may take more days off, but they will start school earlier to accommodate planned changes to the district's school calendar for the next two years.

County Human Resources Director Chalice Waits said in Jan. Speaking to the school board at a meeting on the 18th, the calendar planning committee said it wants other school districts in South Carolina to follow suit as they switch to a revised year format.

The year-round calendar also allows for an eight-week summer break and still requires students to attend classes for 180 days, but those days are spread throughout the year.

The main difference between the two calendars is that students have one day off each quarter. Traditionally, students have one week for Thanksgiving, two weeks for Christmas, and one week for spring break.

Students now have a week off in October, November and April, as well as the usual two weeks at Christmas in a revised version every year.

This academic year, teachers return on August 11 and students begin on August 18. Traditionally, the first semester ends after the Christmas holidays in mid-January. School ends on June 3.

To transition to the new schedule, the district is planning a transition year in 2022-2023 that will resemble the traditional calendar, but with teachers and students returning to school earlier than usual.

For the next school year, teachers will begin on August 1 and students will return to the classroom on August 8. The last day of the semester is December 16, 2022, not do this year as it ended on January 13.

"I like the idea of ​​ending the issue in December," school board member Bill Gaskins said of the proposed changes. "Instead shorten the time between the return of our students and the start of the second semester."

The stand said one of the board's goals is to have classes completed before Memorial Day in the future.

The proposed new calendar will be shared with district officials and the public for feedback, with the first reading expected at the Feb. 1 school board meeting.
