Ggc Spring 2023 Calendar – Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of Herty's celebration. I will take this opportunity to briefly describe my journey in chemistry over the years. I started as a physical chemist and moved on to chemistry, polymer chemistry, paper chemistry, and agriculture and food, among other subjects. It is interesting to see how different groups can work together to plan and solve difficult problems. Two specific areas I would like to highlight are sustainability and polymer science.
In fact, sustainability and green medicine has become a hot topic today due to the increasing awareness of climate change, environmental degradation, and the depletion of the world's resources. Since polymers are used by all of us, there are many opportunities to combine polymer science and sustainable chemistry to explore new chemical processes and develop new or improved processes. For example, many examples from my work will show: 1) the use of agricultural and agricultural products as a source of new drugs and products; these can improve and reduce the problem of microplastics; 2) to use biocatalysts (eg enzymes and microorganisms) for the transformation of chemicals and polymers; 3) to apply green chemistry concepts to polymer reactions; and 4) to develop green methods for improvement and development (such as the use of microwaves and other environmental solutions). Because of the importance of sustainability and polymer chemistry for our society, we can expect to continue the research and development of commercial enterprises related to this collaboration in the future.
Ggc Spring 2023 Calendar
H. N. Cheng (BS., UCLA; PhD, Univ. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) is the recipient of the 2022 Herty Medal from the Georgia Section of the American Chemical Society, which recognizes outstanding work and service to chemists in Southeast. He retired in May 2022 after a successful career at the USDA Southern Regional Research Center in New Orleans. He has been active in the development of green polymer chemistry as a basis for the production of acceptable and sustainable products. Dr. Cheng also served as ACS president in 2021. Prior to his election as president, he served in several ACS leadership positions at the national, regional, and professional levels. During his year as president, he recommended chemistry, focusing on the importance of innovation, educational development, continuity and innovation. Additionally, he has been active in organizing meetings and webinars for the benefit of ACS members and clinical chemistry.
