In a 6-1 vote, with two board members absent, the Aiken County Board of Education approved the revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year during its meeting Tuesday night.

With the revised calendar, students will have a shorter summer, but a two-week break in the fall and spring semesters. Each semester there is a one-week remedial week, where students who need academic help can get it.

Boston Public Schools / Boston Public Schools District Calendar

Students in the 2023-24 revised calendar begin on Tuesday, July 25, 2023. Fall vacation is scheduled for October 2-13, with October 2-6 as a gap week. The Thanksgiving holiday is November 22-24. Christmas break for students is from December 20, 2023 to January 3, 2024. Spring break is from April 1 to 12, and Gap Week is from April 1 to 5, 2024. The deadline for the course is Thursday, May 30, 2024. .

Other proposed calendar breaks include Labor Day on September 4, 2023; Weather Recovery Day on Friday, October 20; Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 15; Holiday and President's Day Friday 16 February and Monday 19 February 2024; Weather Recovery Day Thursday March 28; And Friday 29 March 2024 is Good Friday.

Councilman Jason Crane was the only vote against the calendar. During the meeting, he again raised concerns about the calendar's impact on various programs, including Gateway's athletic, band and art programs.

Taylor Independent School District

The Aiken County Board of Education will vote on a proposed calendar for the 2023-24 school year at a meeting Tuesday.

"I'm worried that a short summer will affect athletics, band and gate," Crane said after the event. "I believe the district will come through, but I also feel it's too bad for us. I picked my thoughts on this. "

Crane added that he supports the concept of a modified calendar, with only two weeks off each semester.

Aiken County School Board Approves 2023 24 School Calendar

"…I'm not so expensive that we need two weeks for these breaks," Crane said. "I think one week is enough, but the board voted for what we voted for, and I'm going to support it. "

During the meeting, Aiken County Superintendent King Lawrence said the summer of 2023 will be difficult for band practice because the summer band camp is usually three weeks long. But there are many options for band directors.

Lawrence noted that the competition is organized by the state and includes a variety of programs throughout South Carolina. He also suggested holding a one-week band camp during the summer and using a grace period for additional band camps.

"Well, you're used to having a three-week band camp during the summer, but what about a week-long band camp during the summer and taking advantage of that time off for additional band camps," Lawrence said. "It's a two-week band camp in the summer and another in the fall. I'm just saying people have to look at things a little differently and adjust."

On the sports calendar, Lawrence said that the competition calendar has been decided by the government, so it will not have much impact. Exercise should be corrected, especially in the summer exercise and its time.

"Football and other fall sports are definitely going to be (games) during that break," Lawrence said. "It's no different than playing basketball during Christmas break, baseball and softball during spring break."

Another concern was expressed about how effective the two weeks of recovery would be. Crane said he's not sure a two-week break will achieve his goals and has heard feedback from others who feel the same way.

"We can build 30 minutes of intervention into each of our days (during the school year)," Lawrence said. "Thirty minutes of intervention for our students in a small group setting is a wonderful, powerful intervention… If we look at five hours of that intervention time, they get 10 times more than they get in the school day. It's normal. So, in five days they earn 50 times more than they earn in a normal school day.This weekly intervention can amount to 30 minutes per week of 50 intervention days during the school year.

"Everything we do for these students is to help them succeed in the next term," Lawrence said. "I think we can do a lot better this week. We heard from a school district a week ago that saw results with a one-week intervention. "

As for Gateway, Lawrence said it should be 30 days and they are looking at how to meet that 30 days. One of the things he talked about was 20 or 25 days in the summer and five days in the fall or five days in the fall and spring.

"After the first year, everything becomes easier because you have an extra week," said Lawrence. "An extra week doesn't seem like much, but that extra week gives you more flexibility in how you schedule your summer."

The president of the school's management board. John Bradley said he had doubts about the revised calendar, but the fact that most people in the survey were in favor of it contributed to his decision to vote for its approval.

"I'm going to vote for this knowing that we're creating a lot of problems for some people," Bradley said. "I'm sorry about that. But again, I feel that we should do what most people want to do, unless there's a reason not to, or a compelling reason not to."
