A former Harvard Business School dean, Clark resigned after LDS church leader Hinckley claimed to be at BYU-Idaho. But Clark has another reason to move to BYU-Idaho, which he says his East Coast colleagues still don't believe.

Devotion to the church and focus on business attracted Clark of Harvard Business School. This summer, two of his Harvard colleagues will also participate in BYU-Idaho.

Clark Gilbert will become BYU-Idaho's assistant vice president for student life, a move that will make him an assistant professor of business at Harvard.

The shift may not make sense for some of his colleagues in Boston, but Gilbert said he chose the position because he works with young people in downtown Boston. He wanted to find a way to expand educational opportunities. Gilbert also felt he and his wife "definitely" answered their prayers that they should go to Idaho.

After retiring from Harvard this summer, Harvard Business School professor Steven Wheeler will also join BYU-Idaho as Clark's special assistant. As part of the church's mission, the LDS leader called in a scribe to replace him.

While BYU-Idaho is attracting some Harvard talent, Church Education System Commissioner Elder W. Rolfe Kerr said the new hires are not trying to turn BYU-Idaho into a Western Harvard. In fact, Ivy League universities have nothing to do with admissions advantage, he said.

Kerr said church leaders have been following the trio for some time, and now is the time for each of them.

"It was really a sideshow," Kerr said. "This has nothing to do with Harvard. These are people who are very capable, timely and qualified for the benefit of the church. "It's not like people from other industries or institutions. "

The Harvard ties, however, have attracted the attention of East Coast scholars, who are now eyeing Western institutions that could house three prominent Harvard professors.

"It's a very clear signal that this is a great university with a unique educational model," Cole said. "Kim Clarke has the ability to connect him to the vision he's invested in the institution and send a great message about what the church wants to do there."

While Clark's resume caught BYU-Idaho's attention, Clark hopes the university will gain traction soon. The four-year-old agency is at a "turning point in history," nearly a year after Clark was first named president.

"Everything I've been through since I've been here has made me stronger," he said this week. "We can see it in teaching and learning on campus."

Design Thinking For Higher Education

Clark has launched a series of new initiatives on campus, including changing the academic calendar to create three 14-week terms instead of four, with spring and summer just eight weeks apart.

The change will add 3,500 students each year to the 18,500 already enrolled. The increase is the first step in a movement to get more students into college.

Clark also leads BYU-Idaho's efforts to be a student-centered institution. Clark said that focus will set the University of Idaho apart from higher education and serve as a model for other institutions.

The school ended its varsity athletics program, choosing to focus on classroom education. Clark is also working to promote more online education and review all required general education courses at BYU-Idaho.

"We can be leaders, we can innovate, we can work on very critical things that we think will impact education," he said. "We have to be very creative and very innovative in the way we teach and learn."
