School District Calendars For 2022

As the latest improvements are added to Denton ISD's Union Park Elementary School, summer construction projects are popping up all over the neighborhood.

Current and future construction on multiple campuses will be funded in large part by a $750.5 million bond approved by voters in 2018.

Even before construction began on Union Park, the district's 24th elementary school, the 2018 bond proposal outlined plans for additional campuses.

Sparks Elementary School Home

About $215.9 million is earmarked for growth, most of which will go to District 25 Elementary School and District 9 High School. Union Park was funded by a bond package approved by voters in 2013.

In addition to Union Park, which is expected to open in the fall, the district's biggest summer projects include the renovation of Strickland Middle School and replacement campuses for Wilson Elementary School and Denton Middle School.

The new Denton High campus will open for the 2022-23 school year at the intersection of Bonnie Brae Street and Riney Road, vacating the current Fulton Street campus. The campus, once renovated, will be populated by Calhoun High School students and staff.

What will complete the cycle by filling the high school campus has yet to be decided, said Ray Craff, co-chairman of the district's bond oversight committee.

Along with Kathy Lawson, another co-chair, Craff and other commission members are responsible for ensuring the district's construction complies with the May 5, 2018 voter decision.

According to the county's bond website, www.dentonisdbond.org, the bond is supported by nearly three-quarters of voters.

It is expected that this elementary school will open for students in the next academic year, with less than 600 students. This leaves room for a capacity of 740 students. Located in Little Elm, the school serves one of Denton ISD's growing divisions.

Although the new construction was funded through the most recent bond collection, it is the latest investment since the 2013 primary bond election.

Other bond projects in 2013 included partial construction of Rodriguez, Bell and Braswell elementary schools, all in the same attendance zone. Braswell was financed in part through a 2007 bond issue.

Union Park Elementary is located at 7301 Fieldwood Way in Little Elm, just north of Braswell Middle School.

Renovations at Strickland High School began earlier this summer. According to district documents, all classrooms and major parts of the building are slated to be renovated.

Parent Resource Center

Construction is expected to take about two years, and students will continue to study in the building during construction.

The campus is expected to be completed with more than 155,000 square feet of renovated space and more than 37,000 square feet of new construction.

The construction of the new campus was done with branding efforts. The decisions were aimed at preserving the traditions of the school. Among the seven versions of the school logo, the members of the branding committee chose only one.

Valley View Isd

After more than six decades in its current building at 1007 Fulton Street, the high school is moving to a new location on Bonny Brae Street. No specific date has been selected

Although Wilson Elementary is building a brand new campus, it will be very different from Denton High: Construction will take place on land where the existing campus sits.

The new campus will be located between East Windsor Drive and Emerson Lane. Council members considered complaints from local homeowners that campus construction and relocation would harm the neighborhood in the short and long term.

Minor changes have been made to the campus design, and construction is expected to begin later this summer and be completed by the 2021-22 school year.
