The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD or UT Dallas) is a public research university in Richardson, Texas. It is one of the largest public universities in the Dallas area and the northernmost institution of the University of Texas. It was founded in 1961 as the private research division of Texas Instruments.

In less than 47 years, the Carnegie Foundation designated the university as a doctoral research university faster than any other school in Texas.

The university is associated with four Nobel laureates and has members of the National Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Sciences in faculty including space sciences, biotechnology, cyber security, nanotechnology, behavioral and brain sciences. UT Dallas offers more than 140 academic programs.

The main campus is officially under the jurisdiction of the city of Richardson, but one-third is within the Dallas County limits. UTD operates multiple locations in downtown Dallas. These include the Crow Museum of Asian Art in the Arts District and the Center for Brain Health and Communication Disorders Call Center, several buildings in the Medical District adjacent to UT Southwest.

Before founding UT Dallas, UG McDermott, Cecil Howard Gray, and J. Eric Johnson acquired Geophysical Services Incorporated (GSI) on December 6, 1941, the day before the attack on Pearl Harbor. With the rapid increase in defense contracts, GRL's instrument division grew significantly from GSI and was later renamed Texas Instruments (TI) in 1951.
