The Helen and Grant Wilson Center Funded Summer Internship Program was launched in 2009 and provides full-time funding to 15 college students each year for summer internships at social enterprise and nonprofit organizations in New York.

The purpose of the internship is twofold: to provide experiential learning and income to students interested in careers in the nonprofit/social impact field, and to provide bright, highly motivated, mentoring students employed by nonprofit organizations. Internships should provide practical, meaningful opportunities for students to make meaningful contributions to the work of the institution.

In the summer of 2021, the Helen and Grant Wilson Center for Social Entrepreneurship will fund 15 internships in social entrepreneurship and innovative nonprofit organizations:
Maria is a December senior graduating from Deason College of Arts and Sciences with a double major in Political Science and Economics with a minor in Peace and Justice Studies and Spanish. In addition to her active life on campus as Senior Vice President of the Student Government Association and Treasurer of the Economics Society, Maria also supports the Department of Economics, where she serves as a research assistant in environmental economics. Her strong communication skills along with her extensive research experience made Maria a standout candidate for this internship at Control Arms, an international organization working on the global and implementation of Arms Trade Agreements. In addition to many administrative tasks and duties, Maria worked with her international colleagues to prepare for the Seventh Bilateral Meeting (BMS7) on the United Nations Program of Action (UNPoA) to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate Illicit Trafficking. Small arms and light weapons in all its aspects Through her preparation for this extensive conference and during the various meetings and plenary sessions, Maria gained knowledge of the workings of the United Nations. After learning about the United Nations through studies and participation in Model UN, her internship experience was even more impactful as she learned about the role of diplomacy and civil society and broadened her knowledge of the international community. Normally. After completing her 8-week funded summer internship at Control Arms, Maria accepted an offer to stay with the organization through the fall semester.

Ashley is a rising senior in the Deason College of Arts and Sciences with a BA in Peace and Justice Studies and a double minor in Spanish and Latin American Studies. A strong advocate for girls' rights, Ashley was thrilled to accept a summer internship offer at She The First (STF), an international organization fighting gender inequality through education. In her role as Advocacy Intern, Ashley worked closely with STF partner coordination groups and their Girls First network to support their program goals. While writing may not have been her strongest skill before this internship, Ashley said she gained confidence this summer by developing and strengthening her writing skills. Some of her daily tasks include writing blog posts, writing posts for "Discover Your Strengths" magazine, and guiding girls in creating their own support networks, including a meditation section and other visual cues to help visual learners. . One of Ashley's favorite takeaways from her experience was asking STF staff about the organization and global issues surrounding gender inequality. Apart from round table discussions where trainees received post-graduation counseling, she was invited to various development workshops and information sessions to learn about other global issues or ways to support girls in their own communities/homes. After completing her internship, Ashley is confident that her career path will lead to more work in non-profits, both locally and internationally, where she can ensure that the girls around her are empowered.

Allison Deason is a rising senior in the College of Arts and Sciences, graduating in the spring of 2022 with a Bachelor of Science in Communication and a minor in Psychology. A proud member of Phi Mu University's chapter, Allison is the president of Charities for Her Youth, where she works closely with Children's Miracle Network Hospitals to organize and facilitate virtual fundraisers. Prior to securing her position at Wateroid this summer, Allison worked for a local non-profit that focused on creating summer outdoor programs for New York City youth. As a summer philanthropic intern at Wateroid, Alison researched potential and current supporters and analyzed resources and data in an effort to develop farming and farming strategies. She explains how to adapt stories from the field to a wide audience of donors, presents interviews and media for Wateroid's quarterly publication, and supports her team in raising more than $1 million annually for field programs, operations and global initiatives. Through her internship experience, Allison strengthened her research, communication and fundraising skills, gained a better understanding of the inner workings of a nonprofit, and learned about the power of building relationships with donors. After completing her 8-week, funded summer internship, Wateroid extended Allison's internship into the fall semester.
A rising senior in the Deason College of Arts and Sciences, Carolyn is pursuing a bachelor's degree in political science and peace and justice studies. Having previously completed an internship at a local community organization in Westchester, Carolyn was immediately drawn to apply for the development internship position at WestHub because she had developed a deep connection to the community even though she did not live there. In her role as Development Intern, Carolyn focused on the preparation of WestHub's annual impact report The event was particularly significant as the organization celebrated its 40th anniversary To illustrate Westhab's success over 40 years, he created a timeline highlighting his milestones, identified success stories among his clients, and conducted interviews to document their experiences.
