Any changes the board makes to the schedule won't go into effect until the fall of 2023. They plan to review the options at their next meeting on April 20.

The Unalaska School Board is considering changing the district's calendar and is seeking community input.

At their meeting Wednesday, board members discussed three different options for next school year's schedule, one of which was developed by member Kerry Mahoney. That postpones the entire school year and puts the first day of school on September 5, about two to three weeks later than usual.

"This [calendar] is proposed around what I think is great for family life," Mahoney said at the meeting.

With all of August off, families vacationing on the island can have more time to enjoy the short Aleutian summer, he said.

"I like the idea of ​​enjoying a whole month of August before getting into the grind of school and sports," Mahoney said.

His bill also moves the end of the first quarter from before the winter break to the end of January. Mahoney said older kids can enjoy holiday gatherings and events more instead of stressing about finals, which often come just before winter break.

Athletic director and high school principal Jim Wilson said he was concerned that the first day of school in September could have a negative impact on fall sports such as cross country and swimming.

The Alaska Schools Association still expects districts to begin practicing in August in preparation for regional and state tournaments, he said.

"You may find that kids don't want to swim or run if they start a month or a month and a half later than everyone else," Wilson said.

Mahoney's schedule also moved the last day of school to June 14, after general dismissal around mid-May.

Cross country coach and preschool teacher Joni Scott worries that being away from school for so long — with 17-hour days — will take a toll on kids mentally and physically.

"When you get to the end of June and they've only slept seven hours for two or three months, their brain can't function and learn," he said.

Mahoney's design could also make summer school a problem because it would lead to the end of the summer, administrators said. Staff and parents at the meeting said families often don't want to stay that late in the summer.

Equity & Inclusion

Board members say they want to hear from community members about the proposed changes throughout the school year. The administration has not decided when the final selection will be made. If necessary, they can wait with the selection until next fall.

Previous schedules, as well as a blank template that community members are encouraged to fill out, can be found on the district's website. Administrators say the board's design will soon be available online.
