Njit Fall 2023 Academic Calendar – The New Jersey Institute of Technology is a public school located in suburban Newark, New Jersey. NJIT was founded in 1881 and now admits approximately 11,652 students annually, including 9,084 undergraduate students. NJIT offers housing for up to 2,000 students. Most students live in off-campus housing, and 30% of students spend their weekends on campus.

The symposium highlights potential avenues for growth and practice formation, as well as issues at stake in the field. This panel examines current value systems in contemporary design practice for managing and creating jobs, assessing risk, and mediating fundamental economic and social change in the design of the built environment. Focusing on the work of designers in our current production culture, participants will hold critical discussions about the external forces influencing the practice and the growing problem of marginalization of the design sector. Environmental evolution will be examined through historical, ethnographic and other qualitative lenses, revealing a complex system of relationships between key actors in the creation of the built environment.
In explaining the organizational differences between formal and informal design methods, corporate conglomerates and grassroots design groups, the discussion will focus on the social role of design, issues of professional ownership and opportunities to expand the design agency in the face of an uncertain future.

Aaron Cayer is an ethnographer, historian and architectural educator. He is currently an assistant professor of architecture at the University of New Mexico. Prior to New Mexico, he taught architectural history and theory at Cal Poly Pomona and was a Senior Research Associate at cityLAB, an urban research center in UCLA's Department of Architecture and Urbanism, from 2012-2017. Also in Los Angeles, he founded the Los Angeles branch of The Architecture Lobby in 2016. Aaron received his Ph.D. in Architecture from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Architecture from Norwich University in Vermont. His current research focuses on the history and theory of postwar corporate architecture as informed by labor, capitalism, and urban political economy.
Neena Verma is an architect and theorist based in New York City. Her research and writing focuses on the intersection of practice and society, with particular challenges to the practices of perception and beauty. As a former lawyer, Neena's analysis takes into account legal and architectural expertise.
Neena's writing has appeared widely, most recently in Architectural Research Quarterly, and her collaborative work has been presented before the Association of American Law Schools, the Buenos Aires Biennale, and the Venice Biennale. He is a
