Utk Calendar 2023-2024 – Early Education Centers are high-quality, developmentally appropriate preschool programs that address the social-emotional, physical, and cognitive needs of the population served. ECED's mission and beliefs outline a commitment and responsibility to the diverse cultural and linguistic needs of children and families.

Hours of operation are generally Monday – Friday 6:00am to 6:00pm. The centers operate 246 days a year.

Families with 70% or less of the state median income are eligible, and the family or child must meet eligibility requirements such as employment, training, job search, etc. Fees may be required based on gross family income.

The California State Preschool Program Part-Day (CSPP Part-Day) is a three-hour educational program for children ages three and four, with priority given to four-year-olds. These programs are located in elementary schools. The CSPP half-day program provides personalized learning experiences before children enter kindergarten.

Hours of operation are Monday through Friday during the 180-day school year, with two sessions offered daily of 3 hours each.

Professional Development Professional development for all teachers and aides is aligned with the California Prekindergarten Learning and Development Guidelines, state mandates for expected outcomes, and the Early Childhood Education Branch's Early Education Improvement Plan, approved by the Board of Education in February 2001.

Curriculum and Literature Basic and essential documentation for California State Preschool Programs (CSPP) is consistent with the goal of providing a high-quality early learning experience that prepares students for school and life. The Early Childhood Education Division is committed to supporting the cognitive and social-emotional development of all students as they prepare to transition into the district's kindergarten programs. The core curriculum used in all CSPP programs is aligned to the California Foundations of Preschool Learning (Volumes 1-3) and the California Preschool Learning Framework (Volumes 1-3). Each of these guiding research-based documents is designed to provide standards and developmentally appropriate practices so that all children will succeed. Depending on the foundations and frameworks, teachers use different strategies to include the diverse needs of all children. In addition, students in CSPP programs are assessed twice during the school year using the Expected Outcome Development Profile (DRDP) 2015. The results of the DRDP are shared with parents so that parents can see the progress their child is making in areas such as learning, math, science, literacy and physical development.

Parent Strategies State and district regulations promote the inclusion of parents in early education programs in meaningful ways. The Division of Early Childhood Education operates the Parent Leadership Institute to train all parents of preschool age students in the following aspects: Parents as Leaders of their Child, Parents as School Leaders, and Parents as Policy Leaders.

The California School-Age Family Education (Cal-SAFE) program is a comprehensive, integrated, community-based, school-based program serving prospective and parenting students and their infants and toddlers. The program is designed to improve the educational experience, increase access to support services for enrolled adolescent parents, and provide child protection and development services for their children.

Female and male students age 18 and under who have not graduated from high school, if they are an expectant parent, a custodial parent or parents who play an active role in the care and supervision of their child.

The program is offered during the high school's instructional period, typically six hours per day for 180 days per year.

The California Department of Education requires the district to provide professional development to all Cal-SAFE staff. This division provides professional development in curriculum, instruction, and assessment.

Transitional Kindergarten, or TK, is a two-year kindergarten program. TK provides an early childhood education program that builds a bridge between the preschool years and traditional kindergarten. Beginning in the 2022-2023 school year, select schools will offer the Universal Transitional Kindergarten (UTK) program for children who turn 5 between September 2 and September 1 of the current school year. Other schools not listed may offer Transitional Kindergarten for children who turn 5 between September 2 and February 2. Beginning in 2023-2024, all district schools offering Kindergarten will have UTK programs.

The TK and UTK programs follow the traditional kindergarten full-day schedule with a 6-hour daily program Monday through Friday during the 180-day school year.

Transitional Kindergarten is designed for, but not limited to, students who will turn 5 between September 2nd and February 2nd for the 2022-2023 school year. Children benefit from a rich foundational early childhood education program to prepare them for success in traditional kindergarten. Parents must complete a standard LAUSD Initial Enrollment Packet, sign the Parents of Eligible Student Requesting Transition Kindergarten form and complete and sign the CDE Kindergarten Continuity Form.

The program provides a well-designed classroom program to build the social and academic skills children need for success throughout their school careers. A 50:50 dual language early education pilot program implemented at ten sites last year will run through the 2021-2022 school year. The program is a split-day format (50% Spanish, Korean, Mandarin, Armenian; 50% English – all Spanish, Korean, Mandarin, Armenian in the morning, all English in the afternoon) or vice versa. Teachers maintain the target language following the 50/50 model and "switch" during the day. There is a thematic connection across the Spanish/Korean/Mandarin/Armenian, and English sections of the curriculum, and deliberate planning in which language is taught.
