UVU is an integrated university and community college that educates every student to succeed in work and life through excellence in engaging teaching, service and scholarship. This post looks at how a service organization like the UVUDivision of Digital Transformation (Dx) can participate in engaged learning.
UVU's Office of Engaged Learning describes engaged learning as teaching, learning, and scholarship that engages faculty, students, and the community in mutually beneficial and respectful collaboration. Consider the three possible pairs of students and professors, community and faculty, and students and community.

First, students learn from professors, and professors in turn learn from students. In addition, students help faculty develop their scholarship. Second, our community advises our faculty and gives them scholarship direction. Similarly, our faculty develops scholarships that benefit our community and the local economy. Finally, our community provides mentorships, internships, scholarships and jobs for our students and graduates, and our students bring knowledge, energy and new perspectives to our community.
Dx at UVU is similar to IT organizations at other universities in that Dx provides IT infrastructure such as networks, servers, storage, telephony, identity, cybersecurity and more. Additionally, Dx includes enterprise architecture, product portfolio management, process improvement services, learning technology, instructional technology, mobile computing platforms, learning studios and more.
Dx provides these products and services through the employment of full-time, part-time and certain student employees. In addition to their "day job," some of these employees teach as adjunct professors in various academic departments across the university. In this role, they facilitate engaged learning as described above.

However, campus service organizations such as Dx can fully participate in engaged learning as members of the larger community. In other words, Dx should serve as an advisor to our faculty, providing real-world experience, data, and direction for their academic scholarship. Similarly, Dx should use faculty scholarship that informs our work. Dx must provide mentorships, internships, scholarships and jobs for our students and graduates. These students will in turn bring new knowledge, energy and new perspectives to Dx. This student insight into student experiences of the services provided is invaluable and will undoubtedly improve the services provided.
So what does it take to convert Dx? There are several essential tasks, approaches and ideas.
Digital transformation is much more than just technology and its uses; it is a change in thinking, process and culture. The time has come for Dx and other campus service organizations to transform themselves for the direct benefit of our students. Dx staff and all campus organizations must become teachers, mentors, and role models for the students who come to us to learn and grow. We have a great opportunity to impact the world forever. Join me in this great endeavor!

In a recent article in the Deseret News, Samuel Benson writes that Utah Valley University (UVU) is leading a technological revolution in higher education. He makes several key points.
In response to Mr. Benson's article, several individuals asked what exactly makes UVU different from other institutions. What is UVU's secret sauce? Well, that's a question worth answering. It's not so much what we do as who we are. The rest of this post will be about who we are, the culture of UVU, and what we have done and will do.
Clayton M.'s book Christensen's "The Innovator's Dilemma" talks about how established industries must change to remain competitive. If they are unwilling or unable to change, they are doomed to ultimate failure. We all know GAFA or Google (1998), Amazon (1994), Facebook (2004) and Apple (1976). I'm old enough to remember alternative search engines, bookstores, mySpace, and computer companies like Digital Equipment Corp., Compaq, and IBM. While some of these still exist, they have become less important in industries dominated by the Big Four. What happened? The innovators who founded the Big Four disrupted the existing market space and the previous big players failed or chose not to compete. By the time they realized they were in danger of losing their markets, it was already too late.

According to Britannica, the first true university in the West was founded in Bologna in the late 11th century. Interestingly, Britannica, older than the US but only 1/4 the age of the modern university, which by 2012 was selling a 32-volume encyclopedia for $1,400, had to adapt to the new market. Britannica has discontinued its collection, which it has published annually since 1768, and now offers an annual online subscription for $70.
Like Britannica and many other companies in many industries, higher education must adapt to changing needs and demands. If universities are unwilling or unable to change, they risk becoming irrelevant. Our students will demand and deserve that we offer them an education in a way that they can and want to use. They will want their education to lead to well-paying jobs. Employers want access to students and graduates with the hard and soft skills needed to be competitive. Finally, society demands that higher education provide the above without sacrificing the education students need to become productive and civic members of our global community.
History, Clayton Christensen and GAFA teach us that if we are unable or unwilling to adapt in higher education, we will be replaced by innovators who will take the initiative to provide a more modern education. We see some of this happening already with Grow with Google, Microsoft Learn, Great Learning, HackBright Academy, DevMountain, Western Governors University Academy, BYU Pathway Worldwide and many others. So how do we adapt to changing needs and wants while maintaining the university's identity? Part of the solution is to take advantage of information technology and apply it where and when to increase student success, learning and graduation rates, and decrease the time and cost of graduation.

While nearly every higher education institution is taking courses online, training faculty to work remotely, and strengthening IT infrastructure, UVU is truly changing the educational landscape. It starts with the exceptional culture that our students, faculty and staff have developed over the years. Our students are diverse, inclusive and persistent, and our faculty care about student success
